Apple's Latest Siri Announcement Could Mean the End of Apps on Your iPhone

The promise of Siri has always been that there are some things that your iPhone should just be able to do for you. For most of its existence, that’s been limited to setting timers and creating reminders. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, and the moon is in the right phase, and you ask very nicely, Siri would play music.

Mostly, however, the story of Siri has been about how Apple, the most valuable company on earth, couldn’t figure out how to make a voice assistant that could live up to the promise. In fact, the most frequent tech advice I give people is that the only device that should have “Hey Siri” enabled is your Apple Watch. Trust me, this is the correct take.

The breaking point for me was when one of our children asked Siri to play “It’s a Small World,” to which it responded, “Sure, here are songs from The Spice Girls,” which is not a thing I ever want to happen in my home.

Then, a few years ago, Apple decided to give Siri some superpowers called Apple Intelligence, which would let it do far more things on your iPhone. The problem is that Apple overpromised and underdelivered. In fact, the company had to mostly start over from scratch, finally delivering most of what it demoed two years behind schedule.

Then, on Tuesday, Apple announced that it would open Siri AI to all developers. I know that sounds super boring, but hear me out: this is very good news. Look, you know how iPhones work. You open an app, find what you need, tap around for a bit, and then close the app when you’re done. It’s why your iPhone has a home screen full of apps—to make it easy to find the ones you want.

If you’re lucky, the whole thing is relatively simple as long as you don’t get distracted by notifications or random emails you need to take care of. If you’re not lucky, you end up forgetting what you were trying to do and spend 40 minutes scrolling Instagram Reels instead.
